I wrote Wednesday about differing views as to the effect of retiree migration on the quality of life in Polk County. I shared some ideas I heard in a conversation with a locally bom gentleman, and suggested that often people resort to grip ing rather than muster the "per sonal courage" to look an opponent in the eye and try to work things out amicably. Well, the gentlemen I had talked to felt mustered enough to look me in the eye Wednes day afternoon. I believe, after meeting him in person, he'd have no problem confronting anyone. The primary topic of dis cussion was the upcoming feasibility studies for a pro posed conversion to natural gas, city-wide. Alex Lowe of A & L Undergrounds addressed the council, and Mayor Bob Cog- dell noted that there is a lot of interest in the town of Car tpo- bello in joining onto a natural gas system. "As I understand it, there arc people as far away as Inman who are interested in this natu ral gas," said Councilman Hol lis S. Constance. "They are wondering just how far down we are going to extend our sys tem." Mayor Cogdell said that the policy requires the town to con duct these feasibility studies as a prelude to action. The Council also announced that the polls will open in Lan drum this Friday, April 12 at Noon in order to allow candi dates to file their petitions for the upcoming special election on June 18. The election will be to fill the vacancy created when Councilman Jim Helms moved out of the district. One candi date for the council seat, Harold Hill, briefly addressed the Council.
